SoundTable @ Grand Detour- Dec. 5th

SoundTable is a collective group of sound artists/musicians who meet monthly to discuss/demonstrate anything and everything pertaining to music/sound/noise- with an emphasis on the experimental.

A place to expore interactively, stimulate creativity, make connections, foster collaborations in a laid back way.

New discussion leaders and topics every month.

Next talk on minimalism by Robby Kraft- Dec. 5th 7-9pm

"This subject matter is reducing Philip Glass' music into simple forms, or, deconstructing Philip Glass' musical language. After this, program a computer to incorporates these shapes into a new musical language and compare this to Philip Glass. Review Philip Glass' influences and where he fits into the classical school. Finally, explore avenues Philip Glass did not utilize which our program has now made available."

"We have been the musical backdrop for art houses, outdoor farm and mountain festivals, rock halls, intimate clubs, creative rebirths, beaches, forests, farmers' markets, plush lounges and eclectic coffeehouses. Our sound offers a little something for everyone and we cater to all ages when reaching out to whomever might gift us the platform to speak to the people in letting them be the judge of whether or not we have something worth sharing."

Talk about Experimental-Strange Instruments 11.7.2010 @ Grand Detour

(SoundTable animation using found & homemade instruments for sound design).

We're enthused to announce the first SoundTable on Nov. 7th was well received! Thank you to all who contributed their time and thoughts in the demonstrations/discussion on unique & unusual instruments.

The night kicked off with a demonstration by Jeffrey Von Ragan. He exhibited how he created a sound track for an animation by Ben Popp. The homemade/found instruments utilized included: A nut necklace, raisin box whistle, coffee can cuica, and a Victorian Oscillator speaker (See link above).
People in attendance talked about making instruments with glass (glass marimba), and a unique instrument called a Daxophone (a wooden bowed instrument). See link below...
Also demonstrated was the use of an old Digital 8 camera set on frame mode that was clicked every 3 seconds creating a fractured, stuttering visual and audio of an experimental band. It was strange, beautiful and compelling.

An important resource for luthieres and anyone interested in unusual, experimental intruments is Bart Hopkin's webstite:

(unique instrument building- books, tools, Etc...)

Please stay posted for more SoundTable to come.
