no. fest 2011- Sound and Image Gallery

Ben Popp demonstrating the sound strips of film to a young lad. By pulling the film through the audio head of the projector back and forth strange sounds are delivered. Recordings of the event produced by Jeffrey Von Ragan can be heard at: www.soundcloud.com/von-ragan

Ben Popp through Grand Detour put on a spectacle of sight and sound at the 4th annual no. fest. The event was located in the fencing studio in downtown St. John's, PDX. Included in the event were film strip loops available to manipulate by coloring and scratching, an interactive video animation using Max MSP, created by Dustin Zemel. Also, there were two 16mm projectors placed on there side for sound exploration. Good show!

The following excerpt was taken from "Oregon Music News"... (Mentioning their bi-weekly stint at Backspace.)

"Not an open mic or a hippie jam sesh, more R2-D2 than RJD2, Battery Powered is “drum circle v2.0,” according founding ensemble member Elias Foley. It’s a new night of battery-powered electronic music and collaboration coming to Backspace starting on November 15th and continuing every other Monday (opposite Dorkbot) at 8pm.

Simply put: “The evening is a battery-powered music ensemble jam and open mixer session. Inclusive, fun and inviting (and at times and epic mass of grinding handheld techno!). Certain nights will also feature solo artists, small ensembles and touring artists, all within an open space of structured improvisation and collaboration.” Inspired by “conversations, late night jam sessions, and months of headphone composition and production, Jesse Garcia, Elias Foley and an evolving cast of engineers, players, technicians and producers took these ideas and have been expanding upon them using ensemble based improvisation and collaborative development.

For all you electro-engineers or circuit-bent hobbyists, it gets geekier: Battery powered music production is an expansion set for the well-established genre of chiptune. As for how this differs from chiptune…well chiptune was a genre built around that pulse wave sound of the 8 bit chips in the earlier gaming systems, handhelds and PCs. Battery powered music welcomes this rich classic sounds and also invites the polyphony of voices available in bent instruments/toys & the newer 16 bit battery-powered musical systems. We are interested in innovations in battery power, rechargeable technologies."

*Come join us for an intimate night of odd music devices and discussion at Sound Table!
